  • November 1880 saw the Victoria Hotel Melbourne open its doors only 45 years after the City was established.
  • The original lobby is still in use today, the skylight dome was removed in World War 2 as a blackout measure.
  • In its early years the hotel was known as the Coffee Palace with no alcohol being served at all. Beef tea, mineral waters and coffee were only served.
  • This Hotel was the 1st City hotel to have electricity installed in its rooms.
  • Porters used to travel by cable tram to meet guests at Spencer Street Railway Station and by railway to Port Melbourne to meet overseas liners.
  • During the war years the American Army occupied a large section of the hotel.
  • The Hotel catered to many Olympic Games activities while the Melbourne Olympics were being held such as the State Government reception to His Royal Highness the Duke of Edinburgh.
