Melbourne in Australia has to be one of the best places for families to enjoy spending time together.
The types of picnicking places you can enjoy with the family celebration or even a more intimate occasion can range from a local, suburban, neighborhood park through to a more formal botanical setting or perhaps one of the beautiful beaches that line the coast of Victoria.
Within the city itself you can find beautiful and accessible parklands and open spaces to rest and recuperate. Parklands with free gas bbq's, plenty of benches and table settings to make your picnic enjoyable
Melbourne's vast outer areas and unique Victorian countryside provide somewhere for picnic places, be it for a formal or informal celebration or get together.

The Alexandra Gardens are located on the south bank of the Yarra River, opposite Federation Square and the Melbourne Central Business District.
Alexandra Gardens are part of a larger group of parklands directly south-east of the city, between St. Kilda Road and the Yarra River known as the Domain Parklands, which includes;
Alongside the Yarra River are numerous Rowing Club boathouses and past the boathouses are lawns with electric barbecues for the public to enjoy this pretty area.
Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens are 38 hectares and displays more than 50,000 plants with diverse plant collections, year-round events and unique tours

The 8 hectare (20 acre) park lies immediately to the south-east of the central business district, between Flinders Street and the north bank of the Yarra River.
Birrarung Marr is more like beachside promenade rather than a formal garden park.
There are barbecue facilities, as well as public toilets near Speakers Corner, makes for an excellent inner city picnic spot.

The parkland, Albert Park lake and Gunn Island, provide a grassy wetlands habitat for nearly two hundred bird species. Some live here permanently and others fly in on their annual migration.
There are nine separate picnic areas, most with barbecues, shelters and toilets and there are several playgrounds of varying sizes for the kids to enjoy.
The Australian Grand Prix is held around the Melbourne Grand Prix Circuit around the lake in March each year.
The Albert Park Yacht club runs sailing classes over winter months on the lake.
As Melbourne's Westgate area was being reclaimed and the Westgate Bridge was being built, so was this parkland area being set up as an excellent and top picnic place for local and visitors alike.
Conveniently located along the eastern banks of the Yarra River under the Westgate Bridge, the park offers spectacular views to the mouth of the Yarra and the city skyline.
With free electric BBQ's and children's playground you can now enjoy a picnic lunch with friends or family or cycle along the Yarra River or the Port Melbourne foreshore.
