The best way to get a sense of what it means to live in this city is to sit quietly at one on Melbourne's cafe's and watch the people passing by. There is a connection to the community that chain stores and shopping malls just can't match.
Italy, coffee and Melbourne have had a relationship dating back to the mid 1800's. Melbourne is known as the 'Coffee Capital of Australia'. Enjoy one of the Melbourne walking tours in and around this area learning about the history of coffee making from early settlers days up till today

Markets make the best places to discover what Melbourne's food is really all about. 2 of Melbourne's best are the Queen Victoria Market right in the CBD district and just a little further out of the city is the multicultural, historic South Melbourne Market.
Both are excellent to walk around on a self guided tour or for a more interesting look at each market, my suggestion would be to be guided by a local expert. That way the history of the market, the best stalls and food to try is a lot easier to find.
As the largest open-air market found in the Southern Hemisphere, the Queen Victoria Market is the heart of Melbourne and is the one-stop destination for food, shops, culture and heritage. Whether you're visiting Melbourne or native to the city, the Queen Victoria Market Ultimate Foodie Tour is an amazing package to dive into the many tastes, flavours and vendors of the esteemed marketplace.

On the menu is the freshest seafood, handmade pasta, specialty cheese, cured meats and delicious antipasto. You'll round off your visit with a glass of Victorian wine, a seasonal fruit platter and one of Melbourne's famous food icons, a hot jam doughnut.
