Melbourne Walking Tours - Coffee and Café Walks

The best way to get a sense of what it means to live in this city is to sit quietly at one on Melbourne's cafe's and watch the people passing by. There is a connection to the community that chain stores and shopping malls just can't match.

Italy, coffee and Melbourne have had a relationship dating back to the mid 1800's. Read this article on the History of Melbourne's Coffee for more reasons as to why Melbourne is known as the 'Coffee Capital of Australia'. Enjoy one of the Melbourne walking tours in and around this area learning about the history of coffee making from early settlers days up till today

Markets make the best places to discover what Melbourne's food is really all about. 2 of Melbourne's best are the Queen Victoria market right in the CBD district and just a little further out of the city is the mukticutural, historic South Melbourne Market.

Both are excellent to walk around on a self guided tour or for a more interesting look at each market, my suggestion would be to be guided by a local expert. That way the history of the market, the best stalls and food to try is a lot easier to find.

Melbourne Walking Tours Along The River

The Yarra River is the main river that runs through the Melbourne CBD and walking east or west along either side of the banks will provide spectacular walks. You will pass by huge sporting stadiums to the east and modern shopping, residential and office buildings to the west.

As evening approaches a walk along Southbank can be a spectacular experience with the setting sun reflecting on the buildings facades and on the water beside you.

Walking The Yarra River

One of Melbourne's best 'longer' walks has to be the Capital City Trail which circles the Melbourne city centre and some inner eastern and northern suburbs of Melbourne and is in total 29 kilometres in length.

It takes in such landmarks such as ...

Southbank

Alexandra Gardens and Royal Botanic Gardens

Melbourne Park and Melbourne Cricket Ground

Yarra River

Yarra Bend Park

Collingwood Children's Farm

Hardy Gallagher Reserve

Merri Creek

Rushall Garden, a community garden in North Fitzroy.

Princes Park, location of the Ikon Park football stadium

Royal Park

Melbourne Zoo

Moonee Ponds Creek

Docklands Stadium

Melbourne Walking Tours Along The Beach

When you think of Melbourne you don't necessarily think of Beaches, however just a few kilometres from the CBD you will find 2 beaches that provide easy walking tracks for you and your family.

  • St Kilda Beach (6 kilometeres from Melbourne) Accessible by public transport. For a self guided tour download this guide. The basic foreshore trail is about four kilometres and can be walked within an hour and fifteen minutes.

  • Port Melbourne Beach (5 kilometres from Melbourne) Accessible by public transport. For a self guided tour around this area, download the Immigrant's Trail guide. Starting at Station Pier, this is a 4 kilometre walk taking in all the early immigration history of Melbourne. A truly fascinating and different walk to enjoy for locals and tourists.

  • Another fascinating walk that takes in both the St Kilda foreshore and the beach at Port Melbourne is the Solar System Self Guided Walk. This is a 5.9 kilometer walk starting at St Kilda and finishing at Port Melbourne. In 2008 artists and scientists constructed a model of our solar system to a scale of one to one billion between St Kilda and Port Melbourne.

Navigate the solar system from the sun to the outer planets by following the bike and walking trail on the City of Port Phillip’s foreshore.

This selection of Melbourne walking tours is only a small section of walking tours that can be found, be tit a self guided waking tour or a more organised and professionally guided tour I am sure that my hometown of Melbourne will provide you with hours of walking fun.
